My Experience With Google Blogger

Back in January 2016 I decided to do a test with my Team Schuman blog using the Google Blogger free blog platform.

I didn’t do this because of money, but I wanted to see if I could get better and easier rankings with Google if I was using their Blogspot platform.

I know most bloggers are afraid if they use Blogger their blog could be cancelled. I was cautious of this as well and didn’t do anything blackhat or try to get a lot of backlinks that didn’t come naturally.

So was it worth it?

Here’s what I have found out after about eight months of use.

Organic Rank

1. Rankings. I can see no proof where Google favors a blog on their Blogger platform over a Word Press self hosted or shared hosting platform.

They seem to use the same parameters for ranking a blog post on their own platform as they do for anybody else. The big difference that I did notice is how quickly a post will rank when bookmarked on Google Plus.

They would rank the blog post almost immediately. The problem with this is when people see a Google Plus ranking in the organic results they have follow that back to your Google blog.

They have to take the next step of clicking on that link to make it to your blog. I’m not sure there’s a lot of benefits from a Google Plus ranking from a traffic standpoint from Google Plus, at least not in the blog writing niche Team Schuman is in.

Blogspot Platform

2. Blogger as a blogging platform. For me I found this extremely easy to use. I didn’t specifically like the fact that you couldn’t have a static homepage.

However, most of the other features were pretty nice. I can see why 46 million people use this blogging platform, and I have just started using it on a paid survey site which I may go ahead and keep.

Professional Template

3. Templates. This is one area where I think it may have hurt me with the type of business I’m in. There are many more professional templates available from Word Press then what Google’s Blogger is using.

Since I’m in the business of writing blog articles, and in some case publishing and promoting them for customers, I feel like when people came to my blog from a social network such as LinkedIn they may have been turned off by the free BlogSpot URL and the template I was using.

We’ll see if changing over to a more professional template from Word Press makes a difference in sales in the next few months.

Summary

I was able to transfer my blog from Blogger over to WordPress using Go Daddy as the host. I already have a domain name TeamSchuman.com registered there for several years so I decided to try their hosting.

For me I mainly tried this because I wanted to see if my posts would rank faster and higher. They didn’t.

Unless they were bookmarked on my Google Plus account, and that’s what Google ranks, I saw no decent rankings. I have a feeling we’re going to do that with the word press blog so I’m glad I switched over to a more professional look.

I know I need good quality backlinks to all of the posts to see organic rankings. At least now I know my blog won’t be cancelled by Google so it will be more worth the effort to get the backlinks.
